JEREMY
HOLMES “My goal is to use wood in an unconventional way and to create a different perception of what a common material can become. I make thin boards using traditional woodworking techniques, soak the wood in water, and then use a free form bending method, manipulating the solid hardwood into continuous abstract shapes. I create the sculptures by refining the raw bending process in a finished form through joining, sanding and craftsmanship.
There is a degree of uncertainty in the process of torquing a raw material like wood, which evokes my curiosity. I try to keep that uncertainty and curiosity suspended in the completed piece to allow the viewer to connect to the work. Action, spontaneity, and improvisation are combined with material and methodology in the search to create a beautiful object.” - Jeremy Holmes |
