KYLE BUTLER:
a wall is a fence is a highway
January 21 - March 19, 2011

Kyle Butler’s work starts with the premise that man-made structures are expressions of control and that they are fallible; subject to infections of neglect and decay they echo the limitations of their makers.  His imagery of architecture, building materials, houses and roadways conflates time and exposes not only the illusion of control but also examines issues of urban sociology. This somewhat somber subject matter is belied by lyrical compositions and articulate mark-making. Likewise, Butler’s innovative methods of incorporating materials like wood panels and spray paint draw the viewer into works that depict varying levels of chaos but do so with an agreeable eloquence.
Kyle Butler lives and maintains his studio in Buffalo, New York. A body of his work was recently on view at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, as part of Beyond/In Western New York 2010. Butler has exhibited nationally and his work has been featured in several publications including New American Paintings. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus in painting from Central Michigan University in 2008 and received his Master's degree in Visual Studies from the University at Buffalo in the spring of 2010
